Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur (Great White Lake in Central Mongolia)

Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur (“Great White Lake”), a freshwater lake in Arkhangai aimag (which is famous for its airag, the typical mongolian alcoholic drink made from fermented mare’s milk), is surrounded by extinct and craterous volcanoes (pat of the Tarvagatain Nuruu range). the lake, birdlife and mountains are now protected within the 77,267-hectare Khoro-Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur National Park.

though not as forested or as large as Khövsgöl Nuur (also called the little brother of lake Baikal, situated in northern mongolia, close to the russian border), it is still relatively undeveloped and has stretches of sandy beaches hidden along its shore.

the lake itself was formed by lava flows from a volcanic eruption of Khorgo mountain many millennia ago. the lava effectively blocked the river Terkh to the north and to the south, thereby forming a natural barrage and thus the lake of 161 square km, at an altitude of 2060m. given its relative close location (for mongolian circumstances) to UB, this lake is also very popular with local tourists.
