mongolia has a population of about 2,4 million. this means that there are more mongols living outside of mongolia than in the country, in particular in inner mongolia (3 million) which nowadays belongs to china.

about 80% of the population are ethnic Khalkha, with Kazakhs (mainly living in western mongolia in the altai mountains) being the second main ethnic group. other ethnic groups include the Durvud, Bayad and Buriat, etc.
